always late to the game, northern california!

the weather shift always comes so abruptly here. it was nearly 90F at the end of last week, and now it's supposed to be in the low to mid 60s for the rest of the month. i can't complain, since i hate the heat, but i will admit that i am a weak californian and i am cold. also, for some reason i am unable to locate most of my sweaters which is exacerbating the problem.

supposedly it will rain this week. there was some much-anticipated rain last night that i think we were mostly oversold on, at least where i live. as long as the fire-prone areas are getting the bulk of it then i'm fine with the weak bits that dirty my car more than clean it.

another unfortunate sign of autumn is the hiring rush at work. somehow, i am qualified to give interviews, which is more stress than it's worth, especially since we're still interviewing candidates through zoom (despite the rest of us being corralled together in the lab/office) and camera communication is not my strong suit. i have about six or seven candidates to interview starting tomorrow through the middle of next month. aaAaAAaaahhh!! luckily this isn't my first rodeo and i more or less know the flow of these things and what to expect. but i'm also much busier this year with the sequencing request load back to pre-covid levels and, bizarrely, having to correct a bunch of variants that for some reason have been mislabeled in our system.

yeah, i don't know what's going on with that. on top of all the errors in the system, the person coordinating with me and the rest of the small team working on this keeps sending us files full of the wrong information and never replies to our follow-up emails. it's kind of driving me nuts.

anyway. i left early today because i had a massive headache that i suspect was brought on by the weather and being in between storms. what a time! luckily i'm not terribly exhausted from the day so i may try chipping away at this fic i've been writing. i made the stupid mistake of not properly blocking out a plot before starting, and i keep adding on tidbits (read: 500+ word swaths) here and there that i have yet to figure out how to string together. it was originally supposed to be a one-shot, but "one-shot" became "chapters," and "chapters" is slowly becoming "arcs"... the roots keep branching out deeper and deeper, and honestly, all i can do is follow along with what these characters tell me.
